An ancient fortified village in the province of Grosseto

Opposite Cinigiano, in the enchanting Tuscan Maremma, on a hilltop, lies the Castle of Porrona.
Among the greenery, its structure blends into the landscape, but once you pass through the elegant Porta Senese, the walled village reveals all its charm: it is as perfect as a masterpiece by an excellent landscape painter, making a leap back in time possible!

Along the cobblestone road, the beautiful mansions, with the warm rosy hues of the stones, accompany the enchanted visitor all the way to the short staircase leading to the small Romanesque church. From there, one faces a grand scene with the imposing castle standing in the background, adorned by a giant oak tree spreading its lush green canopy.

The walled village was built by the Sienese around the 13th century, but the castle, the ancient keep, shows clear signs of later renovations in the 16th and 19th centuries. It belonged to the Tolomei and Piccolomini families, who divided the property and managed its control until the 19th century, as illustrated by the coats of arms decorating the central part of the turret, alongside that of the Todeschini.
And everything is green and silent!
A truly fantastic site in every sense, especially because you can stay there in apartments or a hotel, as the latest owners have transformed it into a residence. (We thank the Reception for kindly providing us with images and information about the castle’s history)
