Parco naturale della Mremma. San Rabano

The Park, established in 1975, extends along the coastal stretch of the Maremma and, more precisely, from Principina a Mare to Talamone and to the East to the Aurelia. The central part is occupied by the Monti dell’Uccellina which often serve as a toponym for the entire Park. Precisely in this central area, about three hundred meters above sea level, between the hills of Poggio Lecci and Poggio dell’Uccellina, in an elevated position, stands what remains of a splendid Benedictine abbey from the 11th – 12th century, built in what was a strategic location that dominated the coast and the most important Roman road artery.
The entire Park is worth at least one visit both for the natural environment it hosts, the splendid coastal scenery it offers in all seasons, the beautiful watchtowers it preserves and, last but not least, the jewel that is San Rabano. A brief historical introduction to what will be illustrated below by the photo gallery that portrays, in terms more immediate than words, the architectural complex.
Documented in 1101 as “Monasterium S. Mariae in monte Arborensi positum”, its construction could date back to earlier times and was built by the Aldobrandeschi family.
