There is an inscription at La Storta from 379-387 AD that records the construction of stables for the horses of the cursus publicus. A chapel here commemorates the appearance of Jesus to St. Ignatius of Loyola during his journey to Rome.
Beyond La Storta the ancient route differs from the current one in that it crossed a series of torrent valleys that the modern route avoids, perhaps retracing the prehistoric route.
